It reduces the deficit more than the sequester, reforms entitlements including federal pensions, and contains no tax increases. It also avoids future government shutdowns and allows the Congress to get back to regular order where appropriations bills and policy riders can be debated and passed based on a common bottom line. Finally, it restores critical funding for our nation’s defense, which is of highest priority.” The compromise to reopen the federal government on October 16 stipulated a budget must be agreed to by January 15, 2014. The bill contains specific spending cuts and non-tax revenue adding up to $85 billion in savings from eliminating waste, fraud and abuse, reforming retirement benefits, and continuing reductions in mandatory spending.
