Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair for the Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement after the House passed H.R. 83, the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2015, which will fund the majority of the federal government through September 2015 and avoid a government shutdown: “Time and time again, the Republican majority has taken us to the brink of a government shutdown due to a failure of leadership and a lack of direction for how to strengthen America. These man-made crises are unnecessary and destructive. “Last night, I voted to put yet another false crisis behind us. I voted for the bill because we need to make critical investments in our transportation infrastructure and ensure our hospitals remain prepared to fight Ebola. I voted for the bill because it's time to increase funding for criminal background checks for those trying to purchase a gun and to expand affordable housing options. I voted for investments like these, and to keep the doors of the federal government open, because it will put us on track to reversing the damage caused by years of budget cuts and sequestration. I want to be clear, however, I did not support the majority’s process and I do not support jamming controversial provisions in at the last minute that are completely unrelated to the business of funding the government. “What I care about is creating jobs, growing our economy and strengthening America’s middle class. We won’t accomplish any of these things if we keep playing political games and threatening to shut down the government. I only hope Republicans, who next year will have the responsibility of controlling both chambers in Congress, share these goals and will put forward a positive agenda that will build an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few.” Congressman Crowley is the eight-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx.
