(December 6, 2013) – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD-07), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and a member of the Joint Economic Committee, issued the following statement today in response to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ report that the U.S. economy added 203,000 jobs in November and the unemployment rate decreased to 7.0 percent: “This morning’s jobs numbers demonstrate the resilience of the American economy in the face of legislative gridlock. Republicans have largely abandoned efforts to pass responsible bipartisan legislation, instead staking out extremist positions and blocking every commonsense effort to reform things like our immigration system and our tax code, leaving Congress crippled. “With another budget deadline approaching, it is time to stop fighting and instead adopt a pro-growth agenda that will help strengthen of our country, including extending unemployment benefits that are set to expire at the end of this year. Too many Americans are struggling to earn a decent wage or have failed to find meaningful employment and are not benefiting from the economic gains of the last year.
