Cummings (MD-07) released the following statement commemorating World Aids Day on December 1: “Around the world, 33.4 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. More than 25 million have died since 1981 due this disease, and every year 50,000 more men, women, and children are infected. Baltimore ranks sixth among metropolitan areas for rates of infection. Each year, World Aids Day brings attention to this important cause. “We have the tools to prevent further infections, and treat those with the virus, allowing them to live normal lives. We must work together to halt HIV/AIDS in its tracks by supporting NIH studies, appropriating the highest levels of funding for disease research, and ensuring that HIV/AIDS medicine remains affordable and easy to access for those here at home, and abroad. We can ensure that in the next 20 years, no one dies from HIV/AIDS. “I urge everyone to get tested, know their status, and know that there are options to handle infection.
