Barbara Mikulski and Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-03) in a call for support of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at a press conference at the Maryland Food Bank. The approach of the holiday season highlights the importance of the program, which could face cuts up to $40 billion if the House and Senate Farm Bill Conference Committee adopts Republican authored changes to SNAP. “Today, we heard firsthand accounts of hunger in our community – families who have found themselves in circumstances outside of their control, struggling to ensure they can put meals on the table,” Congressman Cummings said. “As the richest nation in the world, there is no reason we can’t feed every child – and SNAP is one way we can do that. The immense cuts proposed to programs like this take food out of the mouths of those in need.
