Equality Michigan presented Congressman Kildee with the award at their Fall Reception Friday, which brought together community and state leaders to honor the work of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocates in Michigan. “Every Michigander deserves to live a life free from discrimination, and I am proud to be an ally in the fight for greater acceptance and equality of all people, including LGBT Americans,” Congressman Kildee said. “Thank you to Equality Michigan for presenting me with this year’s award and to all of the leaders in the community who are continuing to build on the progress we have made.” Congressman Kildee, a Vice Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, has been a life-long champion for LGBT Americans. In Congress, he was in the forefront of pushing to strike down the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), extending civil rights protections to LGBT Americans and supporting marriage equality. Before the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in 2015, Congressman Kildee filed an amicus curiae brief urging the High Court to strike down Michigan’s decades-old discriminatory ban on same-sex marriage.
