Following calls to suspend Syrian refugee resettlement efforts in the United States by numerous Americans, Governors and Members of Congress, today the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4038, the American Security Against Foreign Enemies (SAFE) Act of 2015. Alaska Congressman Don Young joined 288 of his colleagues, including 47 House Democrats, in voting for the legislation. Today, I stood with an overwhelming majority of the House to support additional layers of safety and security for the American people, said Congressman Young. Without a proper review of our refugee resettlement programs and additional layers of vetting, we potentially leave our doors open to a growing number of enemies looking to cause harm and destruction across the world." While I fully understand a review system exists today, I also share serious concerns with the level of information and intelligence available during that process, Young said. The FBI Director himself said that 'when we dont know much about somebody, there wont be anything in our data and that there is no assurance that theres no risk associated with this. Protecting our citizens and providing for the common defense of our nation is paramount, which is why I voted to suspend Syrian resettlement efforts until our law enforcement and intelligence agencies can verify these individuals do not pose a security threat to the country. Administration officials, including White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, visited Capitol Hill today to lobby Members against the passage of H.R. 4038. A bipartisan majority, including 47 Democrats, voted in unison to soundly reject the Presidents opposition to the bill.
