Alaska Congressman Don Young today shared the following statement after House passage of a bipartisan omnibus appropriations package funding the government through the FY16 Fiscal Year. The bill, which includes a number of tax related measures, passed the House passed 316 to 113. End of the year deal making is no way to legislate, but shutting down the government is even worse, said Congressman Don Young. Ive argued for years we must restore regular order to the appropriations process something I expressed to Speaker Ryan just this week which will get rid of these 11th hour, must pass negotiations. While I share the priority of exporting crude oil developed on private lands, Im afraid we didnt leverage ourselves well in defending some Alaskan and western priorities. I supported this bill for the numerous Alaska focused provisions we fought for and defended during the appropriations process, but I did so reluctantly. This massive spending bill is a tough pill to swallow mainly for what it lacks, but ultimately is provides a number of important reforms and provisions for Alaska and the nation that would not have been achieved otherwise. Overall, the bill provides for the common defense of our nation, protects our veterans, holds the IRS accountable, and strengthens many programs important to the nation.
