Today, with the support of Alaska Congressman Don Young, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1309, the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act. This legislation takes action to prevent workplace violence against our nation's nurses and social workers. These professions suffer injuries from workplace violence at far higher rates than any other profession in the United States. This measure assists in the prevention of workplace violence by strengthening OSHA protections, bolstering risk assessment efforts, and reducing barriers to completing investigations. Congressman Young has worked on this issue with organizations such as the Alaska Nurses Association, and cosponsored the bill earlier in the 116th Congress. My wife Anne was herself a nurse, so for me, protecting the health care workers who take care of our friends and family is personal, said Congressman Don Young. It was a very proud moment for me today to help the House pass the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act. Very frankly, this is how the legislative process should work constituents came to me with a problem, and we worked together to find a solution. This bill is an important component to preventing violence against our nurses and social workers, and I am thankful for the Alaska Nurses Association's work to help get this legislation through this House.
