Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) introduced a resolution supporting the opening of the Somali Embassy in Washington, DC The opening is the first time Somalia has had an official United States Embassy since 1992. It was a tremendous honor to attend the opening of the Somali Embassy, said Rep. Keith Ellison, who represents the largest Somali diaspora in the U.S. The Somali people have shown incredible resilience in the face of extreme social and political challenges. I am proud to support Ambassador Awad and the new Somali Embassy as they seek to build the relationship between our two nations and promote peace in Africa. This is a historic moment. Since the founding of the Congressional Somalia Caucus, we have worked to focus on priorities that would improve the security and governing systems there and the opening of the Somali Embassy in Washington is a tremendous step in that direction, said Emmer. As Somalia works to resettle refugees back into their country after decades of turmoil, famine and conflict, increased cooperation between our countries is critical. I applaud the efforts made by the State Department, NGOs and aid organizations that made this possible, but there is much work to be done.
