Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed the “Tax Extender” bill and Omnibus funding bill. “Our nation faces crumbling infrastructure, a rental-housing crisis, and millions of people struggling with low wages. I voted against the Omnibus today, and the tax extender bill yesterday, because they didn’t go far enough in addressing these critical issues. “The tax extenders bill would double down on the Republican plan to shrink the size of government by “starving the beast.” By passing massive tax cuts for multi-national corporations, this bill will add more than $2 trillion to the national debt over the next two decades.  “This Omnibus funding bill does not provide anywhere near the funding levels we need to provide housing, health care, education and basic medical research for Americans. While this spending bill removes some of the harm from the partisan riders included in the original draft, it fails to ensure that no American lives in grinding poverty, that everyone has access to quality education and that our roads, bridges and subway systems are safe and reliable.  In addition, the spending bill repealed a forty-year ban on companies exporting crude oil. Lifting the ban will cost thousands of American refinery jobs and could lead to as many as 7,000 new oil wells every year. This repeal will give the oil industry an extra $20 billion a year while they ship jobs overseas, endanger our natural resources and wildlife, and add more carbon to the atmosphere.  While I support some of the investments that are proven to help working families to succeed – such as making the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit permanent – the price demanded by Republicans for corporate tax giveaways was too high. When we slash federal funds that could be available for childcare, prenatal care and early childhood nutrition, we don’t just harm people, we reduce the benefits our society could reap from investing in working families. “When I’m asked to vote on a budget, I put the needs of working families first.
