Al Franken (D-Minn.) was honored for his work on energy efficient technologies by the Combined Heat & Power Association. Sen. Franken has introduced legislation to help industries, universities, hospitals, and communities reduce their energy costs by giving them tools to deploy energy efficient technologies like combined heat and power-which captures energy that is otherwise wasted and puts it to use. Sen. Franken has highlighted combined heat and power's importance in multiple Senate Energy Committee hearings. The Combined Heat & Power Association brings together companies like General Electric, Cummins Power Generation, which is based in Minnesota, and others to help increase the deployment of combined heat and power and waste energy recovery systems to benefit the environment and the economy. Today in the United States, up to 35 percent of the total energy consumed is being lost from power plants, industrial facilities, and other buildings largely in the form of "waste heat." In June, Sen. Franken introduced the Local Energy Supply and Resiliency Act to help businesses, communities, and nonprofits capture that waste heat for use in heating, cooling, and power generation. "Making investments in energy efficient technologies will boost the economy, create jobs, and decrease our dependency on foreign oil," said Sen. Franken. "The way we currently consume energy is not nearly as efficient as it could and should be.
