Al Franken (D-Minn.) was honored by the bipartisan advocacy group First Focus Campaign for Children for his extraordinary efforts to protect and improve the well-being of children in Minnesota and across the country. Sen. Franken was selected as a 2013 Champion for Children for introducing, cosponsoring, and voting for legislation to meet the needs of children. In addition, the Campaign took into account Sen. Franken's efforts to gather support from his colleagues to improve the health, educational outcomes, and well-being of children. "One of the smartest things we can do for the future of our country is make investments in our kids," said Sen. Franken. "So we have to give our children the tools they need, like a great education, healthcare, and a safe home. Being recognized as a Champion for Children by First Focus is an honor and a reminder that we can't stop working until every child in Minnesota has the opportunity to thrive and succeed." Franken has worked hard to improve the lives of children in Minnesota and around the country since coming to the Senate. Last month, he helped introduce legislation to strengthen child protection training programs and enhance child protection nationwide. In addition, he recently unveiled two bills to improve early childhood education. Another one of Sen. Franken's top priorities is to help meet the mental and emotional needs of our kids, and this year he introduced the Mental Health in Schools Act to do just that. His bill would help schools provide access to critical mental health services for kids who need them. Sen.
