The bill resolves a legislative oversight that excluded members of the Grand Portage Band in Minnesota from receiving the same benefits as members of the Bois Forte Band. "Getting this legislative misstep resolved is something that has needed to happen for a long time," said Sen. Franken. "I'm glad that our bill will finally give the go ahead to put Grand Portage tribal members on the same footing as Bois Forte members, and I look forward to the President signing it into law." "This commonsense fix has been a long time coming and will ensure that the Grand Portage Band has access to the same benefits as the Bois Forte Band, and I'm pleased the President is now set to sign this bill into law," said Sen. Klobuchar. "This bill ensures that members of the Grand Portage Band will receive important benefits they are entitled to under the federal Treaty of 1854," said Rep Nolan. "It means a great deal to the Band and to our region, and I was pleased to work with Senators Klobuchar and Franken to get this done." The lawmakers' bill, which already passed in the House of Representatives, cleared the Senate late Tuesday night. Now it will be sent to the President's desk to be signed into law.
