Al Franken (D-Minn.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) are calling for action to support students who were defrauded by the for-profit college group.In a letter to the Education Department, the Senators said that all students who attended the schools during the time period when fraud was committed should be able to access important student debt relief options-similar to what is currently available to students who participated in Globe and Minnesota School of Business' criminal justice programs, which were found to be violating consumer fraud laws."...we ask that you qualify all students who attended Globe and [Minnesota School of Business] during the period when misrepresentations were made for borrower defense to repayment," wrote the Senators. "We urge you to work quickly to address their cases and provide these current and former students with the relief to which they are entitled. In addition to qualifying them for borrower defense, we ask that you notify all current and past [students], enrolled since 2007, of their eligibility for borrower defense, their rights under these regulations, and all other options that are available to them for relief from their federal loan debt." A member of the Senate Education Committee, Sen. Franken has been working hard to ensure that students who go to college are protected from fraudulent for-profit schools. He's long focused on addressing college affordability, which he calls one of the most pressing economic issues for our country. He's led college affordability round tables all across Minnesota, and has written several pieces of legislation to help students and families pay for college-like the bill he helped introduce to let student loan borrowers refinance their loans at lower rates. He has two bipartisan measures that would give students and families better information about the costs of college, which you can read about here and here, and he also has legislation to help college students manage costs by expanding access to free online textbooks.Sen. Klobuchar is a leader in efforts to expand higher education opportunities and make college more affordable for all students. She hosted a Steering Committee roundtable discussion with a Minnesota student and national leaders to discuss new legislation - the Reducing Education Debt (RED) Act - which would allow student loan borrowers to refinance their outstanding debt at lower interest rates, making college more affordable for millions of students. She has also been a strong supporter of TRiO programs and Federal Pell Grants that continue to provide fundamental support to low-income and first-generation students across Minnesota.
