Grijalva congratulated several Southern Arizona recipients of recent grants and federal awards that will improve the lives of local constituents and highlighted upcoming grant application deadlines. Details are below. Awarded Grants and Contracts Date: Sept. 30 Recipient: Tucson-based West Point Contractors, Inc. Granting Organization: Army Corps of Engineers Amount: $3.99 million Purpose: To construct a bridge over the Nogales Wash in the Chula Vista neighborhood north of Nogales, Ariz. Construction is scheduled to begin in October and finish in June of 2014. Date: Sept. 30 Recipient: University of Arizona Granting Organization: Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Community Services Amount: $585,504 Purpose: The grant comes through the Assets for Independence program to help low-income students afford a medical education. Date: Sept. 30 Recipient: Nogales Community Development Corporation Granting Organization: HHS Office of Community Services Amount: $800,000 Purpose: The Community Economic Development program is a federal grant effort funding Community Development Corporations that address the economic needs of low-income individuals and families through sustainable business development and employment opportunities. Date: Sept. 30 Recipient: Tohono O’odham Community Action (two grants) Granting Organization: HHS Office of Community Services Amounts: $300,000 (local food grant), $159,650 (native nutrition program grant) Purpose: The recipient got two recent HHS grants. The local food grant of $300,000 will help fund the group’s project to create a locally-based alternative to the current Tohono O’odham school lunch provider. The grant will help establish a local school lunch provider business with local employees based on local traditional foods. The effort will include a cultural education component stressing the history of traditional foods and Tohono O’odham heritage and community. A separate but related grant for a native nutrition program will help the Tohono O’odham continue training young farmers, provide a commercial kitchen with a storage area for farmers to store food, market local produce, and provide venues for farmers markets and other food-related spaces. Date: Sept. 25 Recipient: Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation Granting Organization: HHS Center for Substance Abuse Prevention Amounts: $116,000 Purpose: The grant will fund a program to use new media strategies to reduce HIV/AIDS rates among Latino and minority LGBTQ youth. Upcoming Grant Deadlines Several grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities are accepting applications until early December. Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections(Deadline: December 3) – grants awarded to cultural institutions to aid them in the preservation and maintenance of their collections. Institutions that most commonly apply for this grant are libraries, museums and archives. This grant is given with the intention to help these institutions become more self-sufficient and strike a balance between their long-term costs of maintaining their collections and their overall efficiency. Collaborative Research Grants(Deadline: December 5) – grants awarded to researchers and scholars who are conducting research to further an understanding of the humanities or add to scholarly work on any humanities subject. This grant is awarded to teams of two or more scholars doing either full-time or part-time activities for a period of 1-3 years. The results of this research must then be presented to a scholarly and public audience at the end of that period. Scholarly Editions and Translations Grants(Deadline: December 5) – grants awarded to editors or translators of pre-existing texts or documents of value to the humanities. This grant is awarded to teams of at least one editor or translator and one other staff member doing either full-time or part-time activities for a period of 1-3 years. Projects funded by these grants usually include literary, philosophical or historical materials, however other types of work have been granted funding.
