It’s time for older Americans to relive memories of Christmas past and for younger ones to cherish the moments that will become the memories they’ll cherish as they grow older. But first and foremost the focus of the season must be on the reason for the season – the birth of Jesus Christ. Luke’s account of how the birth of Christ was announced to shepherds in the field is familiar to so many of us: ‘And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.’ My wish is that the light Jesus brought to the world shines upon you this Christmas and that it shines on our men and women in uniform who sacrifice so much to keep us safe, to bring them home to us soon. From my family to yours, we wish you the merriest of Christmases."
