As children, many of us learned that the first Thanksgiving was observed at Plymouth following the harvest of 1621. The Pilgrims had endured a perilous first year and were grateful for God’s provision and faithfulness. The first recognition of Thanksgiving as a national holiday came during the Civil War when President Lincoln issued a proclamation stating that the nation’s many blessings ‘should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people.’ The truth found in his words is timeless. We have been blessed with fruitful fields, industry and technology second to none, strong communities, caring neighbors, abundant opportunity, and unparalleled freedom. I know that I am very thankful for my family, my faith, the great people of Missouri’s Fourth District, the chance to serve you here in Washington, and the freedom we enjoy to worship and assemble as we so choose. A loving and Almighty God has truly blessed this nation and its people. So, as we gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving, let us give thanks to God for all He has given us. Let us also thank the brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces as they fight to preserve our freedoms here and abroad. May we live each day being grateful and counting our blessings.” Congresswoman Hartzler serves on the House Agriculture, Armed Services, and Budget Committees. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
