Bill Huizenga is expressing optimism that the agreement approved by House lawmakers last week is a first step in the parties working across the aisle to rein in federal spending.Huizenga, R-Zeeland, who voted in favor of the agreement offered by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., shared his thoughts on the proposal Monday in an address to the West Coast Chamber of Commerce at Evergreen Commons in Holland. He says the proposal “saves more than it spends. “This agreement is a small step in the right direction,” Huizenga said. “We still have huge, huge issues that we have to deal with. We have to deal with spending.” ... Huizenga believes there are opportunities to make further spending cuts, and is concerned with those lawmakers in Congress whom he calls “debt deniers.” “They don’t believe we have a problem. They look at $17 trillion in debt in a $15 trillion economy. Those ratios are out of whack. They don’t see the urgency (of trying to control spending),” he said.
