Randy Hultgren (R-14th District) told the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce Wednesday. Hultgren is running for re-election against Democratic challenger Dennis Anderson. Speaking to about 25 people at the Hilton hotel in Lisle, Hultgren singled out overregulation as particularly troubling to small business. “No one wants no regulation,” he said. “People want common sense regulation.” Hultgren said that he spent a good deal of time meeting with business owners in his district, and too often heard stories of government regulators that were in “an attack mode.” Hultgren also called for comprehensive federal tax reform, both for corporations and individuals. He stressed that the current U.S. corporate tax rate was among the highest in the world. “We shouldn’t have a tax rate that hurts productivity,” he said. Hultgren warned that health care costs were an unknown that would add to the woes of small businesses in the near future. One audience member said that he found it hard to figure out the new rules regarding the federal health care laws, and Hultgren sympathized with him. “What they created just won’t stand,” he said. “I’m not convinced it was built to succeed.” Hultgren said that the legislation needs targeted reforms to make it more market-oriented and efficient.
