JPMorgan Chase has pledged $500,000 toward the Metro Chicago Exports effort. According to a forthcoming Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program report, in 2013, the Chicago region was the nation’s fourth-largest exporter at $65 billion, but ranked only 28th in the share of its economy that comes from exports. “Some of the world’s premier products are made right here in Illinois, but it is imperative our region reach its full exporting potential. This new initiative targets firms that are ripe to export their goods, helps them navigate the confusing array of compliance procedures, and reduces obstacles faced by small firms when trying to reach new markets,” said Rep. Hultgren. “The collar counties of Chicago are primed to boost their production and exports. I have great hope this initiative is the next step in helping Illinois businesses expand their operations, hire more workers and get our economy back in its feet again. “McHenry, Kendall, Lake, Kane, and Will Counties are covered by two Free Trade Zones (FTZ) in northern Illinois which encourage U.S. trade and economic activity versus foreign competitors, such as allowing companies reduced or delayed duty payments on foreign merchandise. FTZs help encourage and facilitate exports, assist state and local economic development efforts, and help create employment opportunities. The launch of the Metro Chicago Exports Initiative will compliment the function of the FTZs in our region in the effort to find and facilitate export opportunities.” Rep. Hultgren supported House passage of a bill he cosponsored, the American Renaissance in Manufacturing (ARM) Act, H.R. 5360, a wide-ranging legislative package aimed at reducing competitive disadvantages of American manufacturers who engage in the global marketplace.
