It is estimated that 21 million people worldwide are victims of this form of modern slavery. Of those, more than 100,000 children in the United States and, in greater Chicago, between 16,000 and 25,000 women and girls, are estimated to be exploited by sex trafficking each year. “Human trafficking, and especially sex slavery, is a particularly insidious crime because it targets the youngest and most vulnerable in society,” said Rep. Hultgren. “It isn’t isolated to distant lands far from our shores; it is happening right here in the United States, in Chicago, and increasingly in our own communities. It is critical to understand the extent of the problem in order to confront it and determine how each of us can play a role in successfully combatting it. That is the purpose of this forum.” Rep. Hultgren has made combating modern day slavery a priority as a member of the Congressional Human Trafficking Caucus. His actions to date in 2014: Rep. Hultgren introduced H.R. 4703, a bill which would urge nations to recognize the link between prostitution and its impact on human trafficking. He hosted a presentation for Members of Congress and their staffs on the root causes that fuel sex slavery, and what can be done to stop human trafficking. He was selected as a member of the Congressional Human Trafficking Task Force to produce legislation to combat international and domestic trafficking, while protecting and helping victims. He was a featured panelist at the Celebrating Life Unity Breakfast hosted by Patriots United which addressed human trafficking’s threat to Illinois’ communities. In 2013, he hosted a screening for Members of Congress and their staff of Nefarious: Merchant of Souls, a documentary featuring former victims and traffickers. He has co-sponsored the Fraudulent Overseas Recruitment and Trafficking Elimination Act of 2013 (H.R. 3344), the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act (H.R. 3530), and is an original co-sponsor of H.Con.Res. 66, a House Resolution urging that children trafficked in the United States be treated as victims of crime, and not as perpetrators.
