During the visit, a student who was a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) driver gave RH a ride in the school's semi-truck. Student government leaders provided a tour of the school and discussed the importance of civic engagement. Rep. Hultgren visited classes ranging from chemistry to welding to graphic arts, and was interviewed by the local school newspaper on government and current events. “Johnsburg High School’s teachers, students and administrators are an excellent example of a competent, caring and forward-looking Illinois school. Their focus on making sure their students are ready for what comes after high school, whether it be a job or further education, ensure their energies are directed toward academics and programs that fulfill that goal,” said Rep. Hultgren. “I want to especially thank Principal Kevin Shelton for his leadership and hospitality. As the 2012 Illinois High School Principal of the Year, Kevin shows what it means to put the needs of students, parents and teachers first. I hope to attend a Skyhawks football game soon. Go Skyhawks!” Johnsburg High School comprises 690 students and prides itself tailoring their education for every student within AP, technical or career classes, and emphasizing hands-on education for students of all learning types. Hultgren with Principal Kevin Shelton and JHS Student Government officers) Training students to work in heavy diesel mechanics provides students who don't see college as their next step an opportunity to succeed in another field. Two students received a SkillsUSA scholarship and now own their own rigs. (Rep. Hultgren rides in the school’s semi-truck driven by a student certified CDL driver) JHS has also partnered with several area businesses where technical and career students can find internships or job opportunities. Scot Forge in Spring Grove has employed JHS students who participated in the school’s Welding/Industrial Tech program. In the graphic arts career center, students design computer graphics, screen printing t-shirts, and laser cutting of vinyl for decals and signs. Many use the skills they learned at the center in jobs throughout the area. (Rep. Hultgren takes a look at successful screen printings) Rep. Hultgren also discussed the importance of STEM Education with an AP chemistry class, and fielded questions from students in government and current events classes about foreign affairs and healthcare.
