The President’s use of a vague and untested section of the 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act in the twilight of his presidency is a selfish political aim that will deny America a future strategic strength and prosperity. A permanent ban is clearly not the scope of power provided by law, nor is it in the interest of the United States. However, I am not shocked at his willingness to put his political legacy before his country. Instead of listening to rebuke after rebuke of his policies in successive elections, he would rather act like a King. Governors in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia have all agreed energy exploration off the coast would be a blessing to our states, and yet he ignores the will of the American people. “Fortunately for the American people, I believe there is a strong likelihood either Congress or the courts will strike down this executive action, just like his plans for executive amnesty, unconstitutional recess appointments, and illegally transferring GITMO terrorists to US soil. “I look forward to working with President-Elect Trump to reverse these damages to our national interest. Offshore energy production in the Atlantic will unlock billions of dollars in economic production, create thousands of American jobs, and strengthen our national security position.
