Jones (NC-3) defended the commissaries at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Stations Cherry Point and New River after receiving word that the Department of Defense (DoD) may be considering closing all stateside commissaries. In a letter to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, Congressman Jones expressed his opposition to the prospect of closing the commissaries at a time when equal or greater cost savings could be achieved through reforms to the military acquisition system and cuts to the financial aid being sent to Afghanistan. “Before denying our military communities a valuable resource, the Department of Defense should exhaust all other options to reduce spending,” said Congressman Jones. “Not only will this save more taxpayer money over the long term, but it demonstrates our appreciation for the sacrifices that our service members and their families make on a daily basis.” The DoD is reportedly looking at closing stateside commissaries in order to comply with the automatic budget cuts required by S. 365, the 2011 sequestration law. Congressman Jones voted against S. 365 because of his concerns about the impact of sequestration on our military, among other reasons.
