http://jones.house.gov/press-release/jones-demands-answers-troops-fighting-ebola JONES DEMANDS ANSWERS ON TROOPS FIGHTING EBOLA 2014-10-17 2014 2014-10 Republican House NC Walter Jones J000255 jones.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) is demanding answers from the Pentagon on the purpose and scope of Operation United Assistance in West Africa, a mission President Obama has launched to send American military personnel into Ebola-stricken countries in order to contain the spread of the Ebola virus. The Ebola outbreak began in Guinea in early 2014 and quickly spread to neighboring countries Sierra Leone and Liberia. In the letter to Army Secretary John McHugh, Congressman Jones asks how many service members are currently in West Africa, what kind of pre-deployment training they went through, what the role of the United States Army Medical Research Institute is in this mission, and what plans are in place to ensure the safety of U.S. military personnel in Ebola-stricken countries. “Many Eastern North Carolinians and Americans across the country are gravely concerned about the outbreak of Ebola and the safety of U.S. military personnel in Ebola-stricken countries,” said Congressman Jones. “Our service members and their loved ones deserve to understand the exact details of the mission and assurances of safety. The mission of the U.S. Army is ‘to fight and win our nation’s wars.’ By that standard, I find the proposed strategy of Operation United Assistance in West Africa to be outside of the core of the Army’s mission. I will take every measure to ensure the American people get clear answers from the Army on the military operation in West Africa and the safety U.S. military personnel.” Click below to read the letter to Army Secretary McHugh. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
