Kelly Briefs PA Leaders on Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation’s Work with Students 2013-11-19 2013 2013-11 Republican House PA Mike Kelly K000376 kelly.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON — Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) hosted a bipartisan briefing for state legislators from Pennsylvania’s Third Congressional District yesterday, November, 18, 2013, about the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation’s (CMHF) Medal of Honor Character Development Program. The briefing took place in Harrisburg, PA and was attended by Dr. Jay Badams, Superintendent of Erie’s Public Schools; George “Pat” Waters, grandson of Gen. George Patton and a CMHF Emeritus Director; Mike Martin, CEO of Printing Concepts in Erie, PA, who has been heavily involved with the program; and members of the Pennsylvania state House Education Committee. Statement by Rep. Kelly: “I am so proud that the Character Development Program got its start right in our own backyard, and now, thanks to Erie’s students and teachers, young Americans from coast to coast are enjoying this remarkable educational experience. “Schools that participate in this program help their students understand the timeless values of bravery, integrity, service, and sacrifice, as well as the capacity in every citizen to accomplish extraordinary feats. The program also teaches students about the real-life Medal of Honor recipients who heroically embodied these values, and how they can demonstrate them in their everyday lives.” Statement by Superintendent Badams: “We were honored to have been invited by Representative Kelly to share the Medal of Honor Character Development Program with state legislators as they consider important character education legislation in the Commonwealth. “Known initially as ‘The Erie Project,’ this powerful curriculum encourages students to consider personal courage and find parallel examples of selfless service to others in their own lives. We’re extremely proud of this program and the national and international recognition it has gained.” NOTE: According to the program’s official website, “The Medal of Honor Character Development Program incorporates the ideals incorporates the ideals of courage and selfless service into the middle and high school curriculum to build character and promote responsible citizenship. Under a grant from the General Electric Foundation, the Medal of Honor Foundation worked with the Erie and Wattsburg Area School Districts in Pennsylvania and a group of educators for more than two years to establish Medal of Honor-related lesson plans drawing upon the ideals embodied in the Medal of Honor, and their application in daily life.” ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
