The designation will also bolster cooperation between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. “The designation of Rockingham County as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area is a major step forward in the effort to rid New Hampshire of illegal drug trafficking and to combat the addiction epidemic in New Hampshire,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “The reports over the last few months about the massive rise in prescription drug abuse and heroin addiction across New Hampshire are extremely troubling. We must take action to stem the tide of illegal drugs into the Granite State, and this designation is a move in the right direction.” “I have been very concerned about the growing epidemic of drugs, particularly opioid abuse, in Rockingham County and across New Hampshire,” said Congresswoman Shea-Porter. “This HIDTA designation will help combat illegal drugs in our state, and I am grateful to the local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies for their daily efforts to fight this scourge.” HIDTA program was created in 1988 to coordinate among local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies operating in areas determined to be critical drug trafficking regions of the United States. Law enforcement organizations working within regional HIDTAs work to develop initiatives to fight the production, transportation, distribution, and abuse of illegal drugs. Rockingham County will join New England HIDTA. Earlier this year, New Hampshire law enforcement officials stated that drug usage, in particular heroin abuse, has reached epidemic levels in the Granite State. Kuster and Shea-Porter have been outspoken in their support for efforts to end the heroin epidemic and drug trafficking in New Hampshire.
