Set to open in 2015, NCC’s Advanced Manufacturing by Innovation and Design program, developed in partnership with Southern New Hampshire University’s College for America, will create a path for students to transition from a certificate in advanced manufacturing to an associate or bachelor’s degree in precision manufacturing and mechanical design. The program, funded in part by a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, will include traditional, experiential, and online project-based learning that will make higher education accessible to more students and more applicable to the workplace. “Advanced manufacturing jobs are key to the New Hampshire economy, now and for the future,” Kuster said. “All around the state, I hear high tech manufacturers talk about how difficult it is to find qualified workers to fill their open positions. This new program will help provide our students the advanced training and experience they need to land these high-paying jobs, to support their families, and to push the New Hampshire economy forward.” Under the program model, students will engage in online projects under College for America’s competency-based curriculum, and area businesses will join with program administrators to help students gain real world experience working in NCC’s state of the art Advanced Manufacturing Lab. By working with local manufactures, the program will not only produce graduates with science, technology, engineering, and math skills but also the tactical experience to meet the growing demands of our innovative workforce. Under the unique partnership, students will receive the benefits of both a competency-based general education curriculum by completing online projects, and learning hands-on skills in the classroom, interactive simulations, and experiential learning opportunities at Nashua Community College. The College for America model will be customized to the Advanced Manufacturing programs of study at NCC. Congresswoman Kuster has been proud to advocate for federal funding to support the manufacturing program. Last year, she wrote to Eric Seleznow, the Department of Labor’s acting assistant secretary for employment and training, in support of NCC’s grant application. The grant was awarded in June as part of DOL’s Trade Adjustment Assistance – Community College and Career Training grant program. “Nashua Community College is so grateful for Congresswoman Kuster’s support and efforts to secure this vital funding and launch this great unique program,” said Lucille Jordan, the school president. “Looking forward, our Advanced Manufacturing by Innovation and Design program will give students the general education background and the hands on manufacturing skills necessary to meet the demands of New Hampshire manufacturers.
