The tour gave North Country residents a chance to hear directly from Congresswoman Kuster about her work in Washington, and to share with the Congresswoman their thoughts on how Congress can best help bolster the local economy. “It was wonderful to be back in the North Country, visiting with business, outdoor recreation, and tourism leaders from around the region,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “From the energy efficient Model Neighborhood Project in Berlin to the Tourism Roundtable and Cog Railway in Bretton Woods, I had the opportunity to discuss ways to support job creation and economic development in the North Country. The natural beauty, commitment to innovative solutions, and spirit of community throughout the area are an inspiration and I look forward to coming back soon.” During her tour, Kuster held a roundtable discussion on the importance of tourism to the region’s economy. At the roundtable, held at the AMC Highland Center in Bretton Woods, she heard directly from North Country outdoor recreation and tourism experts about the economic and environmental impacts of tourism in the North Country as a whole. Tourism is New Hampshire’s second largest industry, and is especially critical to the North Country economy. The roundtable participants also discussed how Congress can help boost economic development and job creation in the tourism industry. Participants included community and outdoor recreation leaders including State Senator Jeff Woodburn and representatives from the Appalachian Mountain Club, the White Mountain National Forest, the Omni Mount Washington Resort, Bretton Woods Ski Resort, the NH Department of Revenue and Economic Development, the Mount Washington Observatory, and the Northern Community Investment Corporation. Kuster also toured the wood pellet boiler installations at the Northern Forest Center’s Notre Dame Senior Housing Project, which uses federal funds to help Berlin and other communities transition from home oil heating systems to advanced, high-efficiency wood pellet boilers that save thousands of dollars for residents. To cap off her two-day North Country Tour, Kuster visited the Mount Washington Cog Railway, which has been an historic tourist destination for generations.
