The Wilderness Act created the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the National Wilderness Preservation System, which allowed Congress to permanently protect natural areas around the country as wilderness. “Fifty years ago, the Wilderness Act gave Congress the ability to protect America’s most spectacular and unique places for all time,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “In New Hampshire, we are blessed with incredible mountains, lakes, and forests, and it is important for us to maintain this natural beauty for generations to come. I was proud to help introduce this resolution celebrating the Wilderness Act, which established the Land and Water Conservation Fund and other important programs to safeguard our country’s wilderness.” Wilderness areas protect wildlife, habitats, and natural resources such as clean air and water, and provide opportunities for outdoor recreation activities. Tourism is New Hampshire’s second largest industry, generating $4.2 billion and directly supporting 49,000 jobs every year. Nationally, the outdoor recreation economy generates $646 billion annually and supports six million jobs across the country. Since she took office in January 2013, Congresswoman Kuster has been a strong advocate for protecting the natural environment.
