We reflect on the terrible and shocking events of that morning, and commemorate the lives of those who perished as a result of these cowardly acts of violence. But we also recall the extraordinary courage of the servicemen and women, first responders, and everyday Americans who acted heroically in the face of tragedy. The fortitude and patriotism that brought us together in that time of desperation and fear demonstrated the best qualities of our national character. As the brutal murders of James Foley and Steven Sotloff remind us, terrorism remains a threat in our world. We must not rest until their murderers are brought to justice and ISIL is held accountable for these heinous acts.
