The revised regulations will increase the number of patients for whom health care providers may prescribe buprenorphine-containing products approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of opioid dependence. I applaud HHSs decision to make it easier for health care providers to prescribe potentially lifesaving medication that would help treat prescription drug and heroin addiction, said Congresswoman Kuster. Communities across New Hampshire are being affected by heroin use at an increasingly alarming rate, and I am committed to working with families, stakeholders, and community leaders to join together to successfully combat the broader opioid misuse, abuse, and addiction across the Granite State. Im glad that HHS is taking a step in the right direction and removing obstacles to medication-assisted treatment that can help save lives. Congresswoman Kuster has prioritized efforts to address the opioid crisis by convening events across the state on substance use disorders and by prioritizing the issue at a federal level through her work in Congress. Kuster cosponsored the Mental Health First Act, which provides federal funding for training programs around the country that teach emergency services personnel, police officers, teachers, and primary care professionals how to recognize, treat, and address symptoms of mental illness and substance use disorders. Kuster is also a cosponsor of the bipartisan Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, which makes broad reforms in the way we treat addiction by creating alternatives to incarceration and providing states with additional resources to combat abuse.
