As a co-chair of the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic, Kuster was joined last month by 15 Members of Congress in announcing the legislative package of bipartisan bills, which aims to take a comprehensive approach to stemming the heroin crisis threatening communities in New Hampshire and across the country. During todays visit, Kuster met with Keene Mayor Kendall Lane, Police Chief Brian Costa, Phoenix House director Amelie Gooding, Cheshire County Administrator Chris Coates, and other community leaders to discuss the agenda, which was shaped in part by feedback she received earlier this year during a regional briefing she hosted at Cheshire Medical Center. Todays visit gave me a chance to discuss real steps we can take to address the ongoing opioid crisis that is threatening our state and our communities, said Congresswoman Annie Kuster. There is no silver bullet for solving the heroin crisis: we must expand treatment options for those in need; we must find innovative solutions for covering those treatment options, and work with health insurance companies to do so; and we must work together to ensure individuals struggling with addiction have access to lifelong recovery options, including recovery coaches. Last month, I helped introduce a bipartisan Legislative Agenda that addresses many of these issues, but only by coming together as a community like with events such as todays can we truly take a multi-faceted approach to putting an end to this epidemic once and for all. At the briefing, Congresswoman Kuster shared details from her recently announced Legislative Agenda, which includes bills to secure federal funding for states fighting the heroin epidemic, expand treatment options, provide additional resources to law enforcement, and promote responsible opioid prescribing practices, among other measures. The briefing gave local experts and stakeholders the opportunity to provide feedback on the agenda, and to share their own experiences on the ground combatting the epidemic in the greater Keene area. During her visit today, Kuster highlighted how the agenda will support the efforts of Phoenix House and other organizations that are addressing the opioid epidemic. The work being done at Phoenix House is simply invaluable to the fight against the heroin epidemic, and thats one reason why I was so proud to introduce my Legislative Agenda last week. Organizations like Phoenix House provide critical treatment for individuals struggling with addiction, but these organizations are often severely underfunded. So much more could be done with additional federal funding, and thats one of the main goals of the Legislative Agenda I introduced. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to come together and pass this crucial legislation now, so Phoenix House and other organizations like it can meet the critical need for treatment options that is being felt throughout communities across the country. Additional information about the full Legislative Agenda can be found here. Congresswoman Kuster has been leading the charge in Congress on fighting the heroin epidemic. The co-founder of the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic, she has introduced numerous bills to address the opioid crisis, including legislation that is part of the Legislative Agenda package. One of the leading advocates for the funding of CARA and other measures to fight the crisis, Kuster recently led a bipartisan letter signed by 60 Members of Congress to the House Appropriations Committee in support of strong funding. In New Hampshire, Kuster works to bring together experts from federal agencies to coordinate efforts to fight the epidemic. She has attended ride-alongs with law enforcement officials in Keene, Nashua, and Franklin, providing her with a direct look at the challenges facing local police departments and the communities they serve, and she continues to hold a series of regional briefings around the district to ensure the voices of local stakeholders and affected community members are heard. These experiences help Kuster continue to push her fellow Members of Congress and the White House to support important measures to bring an end to opioid abuse in New Hampshire. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
