Representing the VA were Deputy Secretary Sloan Gibson and Meghan Flanz, Deputy General Counsel of Legal Operations and Accountability. Chairman Miller opened the hearing with a call for the VA to accept responsibility for its misdeeds and proactively pursue widespread changes to stop corruption and abuse. During the hearing, committee members pressed VA officials on such topics as: - Whistleblower protection - Disciplinary actions for corrupt employees - The hiring and firing process - Training local offices on new practices - External healthcare providers The status quo at the VA should be a cause of concern for ethical people everywhere. As more individual cases come to light, thanks to whistleblowers, the media, and individual cases handled by Members of Congress, we must not lose sight of the fact that there remain massive, systemic issues within the VA that they have not addressed in any meaningful way. Our brave veterans should not have to fight for our country and then return home only to fight a government bureaucracy to receive the care they deserve.
