| http://loebsack.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=395208 | Loebsack Statement on Veterans Continuing to Not Receive Promised GI Bill Benefits | 2018-11-29 | 2018 | 2018-11 | Democrat | House | IA | Dave Loebsack | L000565 | loebsack.house.gov | legacy | Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement after additional reports brought to light that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has stated that they will not make retroactive GI Bill benefit payments to veterans who received less than they were owed, despite previous assurances that the affected veterans would be fully reimbursed. The Forever GI Bill provides educational and housing benefits to our veterans, which were earned through their service to the nation. Due to multiple information technology glitches, our veterans have lost some of their housing or educational stipends and may never get paid back, which has caused serious financial hardship for many of the affected veterans. Just a week after Iowa National Guard members were forced to pay back some of their salary after a payroll error was made by the Army, it is unacceptable that our Veterans have not yet received the proper benefits that they have earned and deserve, because of an IT issue. This is unacceptable, and Congress must work to ensure the VA has the resources necessary to remedy these technology issues and fully reimburse the affected veterans. As a military parent, I am disgusted that these men and women, who fought to protect our nation, have not been receiving the educational and housing benefits they were promised and may never get paid back. My office stands ready to assist any veteran who may be impacted by this failure at the VA. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
