With Thanksgiving upon us and Christmas right around the corner, please take a moment to reflect on the past year. While each and everyone of us has likely had tough days, weeks, and even months – at the end of the day – we have so much for which to be thankful. When I look back from the last Thanksgiving to this one, it’s hard for me to believe another year has gone by since our family sat around the table eating turkey and stuffing and trying to persuade the grandchildren to eat their green beans before their pumpkin pie. Being near family and friends for the holidays is the highlight of this time of the year for me. It seems with each passing year, more traditions are established. Whether that is making hundreds of sugar cookies and having the kids help frost and decorate them or playing board games with three generations of family, or everyone gathering around to watch the football game on television. Being together is the most important thing. I believe that traditions should be cherished. Growing up, I always looked forward to holidays with my family. It was exciting for us to watch our own children enjoy the holidays, and now we have the joy of seeing our grandchildren enjoy them, too. With each generation, old traditions are passed on and new ones established. The stories that I often hear from my friends, neighbors, and constituents around the holidays are also always encouraging. This time of year seems to bring out the best in folks. I hear stories of complete strangers helping one another during their greatest time of need and it reminds me of all of the tremendous good in this world that does exist. When families and friends stand together to help someone in need – it fills me with hope. At the end of the day, Thanksgiving is also about celebrating the gratitude we have for God’s many blessings. I ask you to join me in giving thanks for the many blessings and freedoms that we enjoy as Americans. For those who are going through hard times, remember this simple yet effective passage from Romans 8:18, “It gets better.” God’s gifts are constant and plentiful.
