The legislation passed with an overwhelming 359-65 vote. This bill means safer highways, shorter commutes, and more jobs for Pennsylvania. Its the latest sign of a thaw in the partisan gridlock that has gripped Congress for far too long, Meehan said. The compromise passed by the House today is the result of months of bipartisan cooperation. It enables us to continue critical road, bridge and highway projects in Pennsylvania. It will provide long-term certainty to states and communities hoping to embark on complex projects. It promotes research into technologies that will make our highway system safer and more efficient. It cuts the red tape and bureaucracy that obstructs needed infrastructure improvements. And it eliminates wasteful or duplicative federal programs that werent effectively making use of taxpayer dollars, Meehan said. Passage of the House transportation bill earlier this month was hailed by SEPTA as great news. The legislation also reflects a commitment to mass transit, so important to so many commuters in our region, Meehan continued. Its a commitment Ive worked closely with my colleagues, Republican and Democrat, from the Delaware Valley to ensure Congress meets. This agreement gives states and regional transit systems like SEPTA more flexibility to use federal support how it will best serve passengers. And it will make transporting crude oil by rail safer. The Senate is expected to follow suit and send the compromise legislation to the Presidents desk.
