Wednesday, those who run and support retail businesses are getting some recognition for their impact on the community, with a new campaign called "This is Retail". The South Dakota Retailers Association is trying to change the way people view the retail industry. "Too many people still think that retail is a low wage, low tech and low talent industry. If we don't start to dispel these types of myths, then we won't be able to compete for the high quality talent we need in the state that has the second lowest unemployment rate in the nation," Shawn Lyons, South Dakota Retailers Association Executive Director said. At a press conference Wednesday, state officials announced a partnership with the National Retail Federation to kick-off the "This is Retail" campaign, which will educate the public about what retail is through facts and data. One way to get that message out will be with PSA videos. "Retailing can be a wonderful career opportunity. We have many young people that are in our business and we've given them a good opportunity and it'll get better in the future," Chairman of Wall Drug, Rick Hustead said. The NRF also took time today to award Representative Kristi Noem with the "Hero of Main Street" award for her work in Congress. "We look at voting records. We look at bill sponsorships. And we look at their strong support on key issues," Michael Cys, VP of State Relations and Political Affairs for the National Retail Federation said. Noem says she's just doing her job, but appreciates the award and the work South Dakota retailers are doing. "I wish you could be with me the many times that I talk about the things that we do right here in South Dakota and talk about you our business owners. And the people that you employ and take care of. And how we could replicate that at the federal level. If we did, we'd have a much stronger national economy," Noem said. Hustead says some of the things he'd like to see from Washington, as a business owner, is more tax relief and pro-business legislation.
