| http://noem.house.gov/index.cfm/in-the-news?ContentRecord_id=B8B352FE-5AA7-44DD-8784-F320EEEDF8F9 | Capital Journal: Noem discusses farm bill, partisan politics with Riggs government class | 2013-11-25 | 2013 | 2013-11 | Republican | House | SD | Kristi Noem | N000184 | noem.house.gov | legacy | By David Rookhuyzen U.S. Rep. Krisiti Noem spent an hour with government students at T.F. Riggs High School on Friday, mainly touching on her experience in Washington and the major things she hopes to accomplish before the end of the year. A good portion was spent discussing the work to pass a new farm bill, with Noem highlighting the need to help West River ranchers recover from the livestock losses they suffered during a blizzard last month. Another purpose of a farm bill is to ensure that the country is able to feed itself and does not have to rely on other parts of the world, such as South America, to meet basic nutritional needs, Noem said. “I think when we allow another country to feed us, they control us,” she said. When asked about partisan strife and the recent government shut down, Noem said many of her peers are doing what they think will be best received back in their districts. Because of gerrymandering and regional political climates, many districts strongly support politicians who fail to compromise. That’s why she tries to get at least one co-sponsor of the opposite party on her bills, she said. “If I can’t find one Democrat to think what I’m doing is a good idea, I probably shouldn’t do it,” Noem said. She also suggested that another way to ensure that Congress is more productive is to improve the bill-passing process. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
