They damage the heart of our social structure by devaluing American workers, insisting that they must somehow compete with cheap, and often exploited and unprotected foreign labor. In addition, foreign production, like steel, is often heavily subsidized by foreign governments and dumped on our domestic markets at artificially low prices, making domestic competition nearly impossible. By not finding ways to protect American industry and the soul of the country, the American worker, we are allowing the ravaging of our economy and the lives of Americans. It is important to understand that Wall Street and the stock market represent how well corporate profits are doing and does not measure the other, longer term, costs of those profits or the economic health of the rest of the society. One example of abuse is the dumping of foreign steel, often highly subsidized by foreign governments. The result is the undercutting of American steel industry and thus mining, mine workers and the businesses and social structure that supports them. Representative Rick Nolan (MN CD 8) has introduced legislation, the Support Our Steelworkers Act (SOS), to stop the dumping of foreign steel on our markets ... to the detriment of our mines, the miners and the supporting structure which is such an integral part of northern Minnesota and our entire state economy. He is working to remedy the situation by encouraging President Obama to immediately impose tariffs to stop the dumping ... something both Reagan and Bush did earlier to support the steel industry...and then to pass the SOS Act. Rep. Nolan wants the American steel industry and the miners to be able to compete fairly and to save a vital industry and American workers.
