| http://nolan.house.gov/media-center/in-the-news/fox-21-local-reaction-to-lease-renewal-rejection | FOX 21: Local reaction to lease renewal rejection | 2016-12-16 | 2016 | 2016-12 | Democrat | House | MN | Rick Nolan | N000127 | nolan.house.gov | legacy | ELY, Minn. - Reaction was swift from Twin Metals today for the lease renewal rejection. Despite the suddenness of it, Twin Metals told Fox 21 that it did not come as a shock to them. “I don’t think we were surprised with the decision on the leases,” said Bob McFarlin, government affairs advisor for Twin Metals. “The U.S. Forest Service, even before they began this process earlier this year, signaled they were leaning toward denying the renewal of the leases. The decision could lead to not expanding mining in other parts of Northeastern Minnesota in the future, and could be detrimental to its economy. Twin Metals said they plan to battle this out in court which could take a great deal of time. Congressman Nolan Reacts Eighth District Congressman Rick Nolan also released a statement today concerning the denial of the mining leases. It read the following: "Minnesota's Iron Range got a real slap in the face and a punch in the gut by Washington bureaucrats this morning." And he continued on saying: "This decision denies Minnesota's Iron Range the opportunity to explore a project in the area that would bring thousands of new, greatly–needed jobs to our region." | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
