Rick Nolan and the governor have worked to get the attention of the White House regarding the iron ore and steel crisis that is devastating the Iron Range. Gov. Mark Dayton and Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken all deserve credit, along with Rep. Nolan, for working hard to repeatedly deliver the message with a sense of urgency that the very foundation of the nation its ore and steel industries are being unfairly hammered by illegally subsidized steel imports. Nolans efforts have been relentless. He even went so far as to spend time with President Obamas Chief of Staff Denis McDonough at a White House Christmas party on Dec. 7 to personally impress upon the presidents top advisor just how dire is the situation. McDonough took what he heard that night from Nolan to the president and Obama directed him to travel to the Range and get some first-hand information on the situation. McDonough called the congressman the next day to tell him he would be visiting Minnesotas Iron Range. The chief of staffs journey to the Range was confirmed by those Minnesota elected officials this week, and McDonough will venture to the Range next Tuesday for a meeting at Mesabi Range College with all stakeholders in the areas distressed mining industry. This is a major development for the area. We need help from the Obama administration and we need it very soon. And it is imperative that message is impressed upon McDonough with respectful passion and the utmost urgency. The chief of staff needs to hear exactly what is at stake the very survival of the Iron Range, which is of vital importance to the future of the State of Minnesota and the overall United States. The cheaters are winning in global trade of steel and steel products. The aggressive infusion of illegally subsidized steel has been out of control. And it doesnt really matter how many rulings come down against these trade cheats, they just keep on winning because the International Trade Commission process is glacially slow in enforcing what is right and just. This has all got to stop and stop as soon as possible. President Obama, just like Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush before him, can take executive action to impose tariffs on the steel products of the cheaters. We believe it should have already been done. But what matters at this point is that it is now expeditiously implemented. The president has the tool to do so Section 201 of the 1974 Trade Act. And it is our hope that McDonough will gather insight from his Iron Range visit on just how troubling is the issue, how much hardship it is bringing to workers, families and communities, and how even the countrys national security is being threatened.
