Rick Nolans legislation calling for a five-year ban on steel imports have a chance of congressional passage and support from President Barack Obama? Very unlikely in Congress. As for the president, forget it. Barack Obama has shown himself to be anti-mining. We believe he has only gone once to a mining operation since hes been president and that was for a memorial service for a tragedy in coal country. He seems to not care one hoot that the countrys ore and steel industries, which have forged its basic foundation and have been the backbone of our national security, are in a freefall. Thats shameful. Regardless the outcome of the steel import ban, the message needs to be sent about what is a crisis situation in this country, and we give Congressman Nolan very high marks for doing just that. Why arent more people outraged that the cheaters those countries that are flooding the U.S. with illegally subsidized steel products are being allowed to win? Why is the national media ignoring this issue that indirectly affects all of us, and directly impacts millions of working Americans, hundreds of companies and thousands of communities? We hope Nolans bill, which he plans to introduce after the Thanksgiving congressional break, receives plenty of national attention, and support in Congress. And that includes from Minnesotas two U.S. Democratic senators, Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken. Half-measures and appeals to the Obama administration fall on deaf ears at the White House. Its definitely time for a more drastic and dramatic measure, and also for unrelenting bipartisan pressure to be put on the president on this issue that should not carry any political party label. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
