http://nolan.house.gov/media-center/in-the-news/wdio-nolan-proposes-five-year-ban-on-steel-imports WDIO: Nolan Proposes Five-Year Ban on Steel Imports 2015-12-02 2015 2015-12 Democrat House MN Rick Nolan N000127 nolan.house.gov     legacy With more than 1,700 Iron Range miners on layoff, Rep. Rick Nolan (D-Minnesota) says he plans to introduce a bill that would ban steel imports for five years. Nolan says the layoffs are a result of imports of low-grade steel subsidized by foreign governments. He says steel imports are at an all-time high but U.S. steel mills are only running at about 70 percent capacity. "Once and for all, it's time for this Congress and this Administration to stand up for American workers and American jobs jobs being destroyed and stolen due to illegal steel dumping by China, India and other Southeast Asian nations. My bill would place an immediate moratorium on imports of foreign steel for five years, so our domestic industry will have time to return to 100 percent of production capacity and so thousands of American workers who have lost their jobs in our mining, iron ore and steel industries can return to work as quickly as possible," Nolan said in a press release. Nolan said he may introduce the measure as soon as Nov. 30, when Congress returns from its Thanksgiving holiday. He said he also plans to introduce a companion bill to a Senate proposal by Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken to allow import taxes in more situations. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
