The globe is getting warmer, the seas are rising higher, storms are becoming more frequent and intense, and the cost in dollars ($139 billion federal clean-up dollars in 2012) and in lives lost and damage is staggering. The question is, what can Americans and their public policymakers do about it? We examined climate change and its growing effects on our region and our planet, as well as some steps we can all take, in a public forum on climate change hosted by the University of Minnesota-Duluth's Masters of Advocacy and Political Leadership program and the Citizens Climate Lobby. I was joined by area climate and environmental scientists, and representatives from Minnesota's energy industry. In a lively give-and-take discussion, I told students, faculty, and activists from the Duluth area that in order to address crisis of climate change, we need to alter our tax and regulatory policies to give investors and entrepreneurs in alternative energy the same advantages we provide for fossil fuels. We need to assure our trade policies and trade agreements - specifically the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) now being negotiated in secret - are written to assure that all nations are held to the same high environmental standards as the United States. We need to assure that oil and gas are transported in the most environmentally-safe and carbon-neutral manner possible. And we need to hold every industry accountable to tough but achievable environmental standards to prevent harmful damage and degradation of our environment. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
