Both the House and Senate are expected to approve the final transportation bill and send it to President Obama to be signed into law. Nolan, the only Minnesota Congressman now serving on the House Transportation Committee, authored the amendment and shepherded it through the committee and onto the House Floor, where it passed as part of the House version of the landmark 5-year surface transportation bill. Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken joined Nolan in urging the conference committee to accept the measure. This is such good news for all the pedestrians and drivers who navigate Superior Street through the winter months when the pavement gets icy and snow piles up high along the sides. Its good news for the businesses that depend on pedestrian traffic. And its good news for the logging truck drivers who will no longer be diverted into the city at risk to their safety and everyone elses, Nolan said. Federal regulations currently prohibit logging trucks weighing more than 80,000 pounds from using I-35. Nolans amendment would permit logging trucks that have a gross vehicle weight of no more than 99,000 pounds and has no less than six-axles to operate on a 24-mile stretch of I-35 including Highway 210 via Exit 235. In remarks a month ago during debate on the House Floor, Nolan cited support for the measure from Duluth Mayor Don Ness, Police Chief Gordon Ramsay, the Greater Downtown Duluth Council, area citizens and logging truck drivers. These trucks are known to, on occasion, tip and spill their logs on sharp turns. Its happened before. And sooner or later, if we dont pass this simple fix, someone is going to be killed or seriously injured. Passing this life-saving amendment will make travel safer for the truckers, and safer for the drivers and pedestrians who live, work and do business in the city of Duluth, Nolan said at the time. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
