http://nolan.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/nolan-to-commissioner-zelle-south-route-safest-option-for-highway-169 Nolan to Commissioner Zelle: South Route Safest Option for Highway 169 Eagles Nest Corridor 2013-11-14 2013 2013-11 Democrat House MN Rick Nolan N000127 nolan.house.gov     legacy (WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The South Route option to rebuild the 5.7-mile Highway 169 Eagles Nest Corridor between Tower and Ely is the safest and best solution for that dangerous stretch of road, Eighth District Congressman Rick Nolan told Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Commissioner Charlie Zelle in a meeting yesterday in Nolan’s Washington office. “The south option is clearly the route preferred by citizens, the one recommended by the Highway 169 Citizens Task Force, and in my view is undoubtedly the safest route,” Nolan said. Commissioner Zelle, who toured the area with Nolan earlier this year, and later participated in a joint public meeting at MnDOT Headquarters in Virginia, promised to factor strong support by Nolan, other public officials, and area citizens into the Department’s final decision. “I will continue to push for the south route at every level, and throughout the various bureaucracies involved in this project,” added Nolan, “as well as continue to prioritize the health and safety of the area’s residents and travelers.” In April of this year, Congressman Nolan sent a letter to Governor Mark Dayton, urging him to encourage MnDOT to complete the project using the Southern Route plan. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
