U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan issued a release stating that Lake Connections will receive $3.5 million from the Federal Communications Commission’s Rural Broadband Experiment. The award will come on top of $66.5 million in federal support that already has gone to Lake Connections, which is working to make high-speed broadband Internet service more accessible by constructing a fiber-optic network to serve residents of Lake and eastern St. Louis counties. The project ground to a halt in August, when county officials voiced concerns that the network wouldn’t be built on time or within budget. Federal money for the network stopped flowing as news of the project’s uncertain future spread. But on Tuesday, the Lake County Board voted 3-2 to commit the necessary local funding to complete the project — an estimated $15 million during the next five years.
