http://norton.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/president-obama-nominates-norton-s-us-marshal-recommendation President Obama Nominates Nortons U.S. Marshal Recommendation 2016-02-04 2016 2016-02 Democrat House DC Eleanor Norton N000147 norton.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C.The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said that President Obama today nominated Patrick Burke to serve as U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia. Burke, whom Norton recommended to the President, is currently an Assistant Chief in the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). President Obama, like President Clinton, granted Norton senatorial courtesy to recommend candidates for federal district court judges and other important federal law enforcement officials in the District. The U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia is responsible for the enforcement of federal law throughout the District. Patrick Burke, who has served as a D.C. police officer for over 25 years, will bring the definition of local experience and expertise to the U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia position that I looked for in making this recommendation to President Obama, Norton said. Throughout his career, Assistant Chief Burke has forged valuable relationships with local and federal law enforcement agencies that will serve the District very well. Assistant Chief Burke has a special connection to our city, having resided here throughout his distinguished career and raising his family here. Burke has spent his entire 26-year career as a police officer with MPD. He began his career as a patrol officer before rising to become one of five MPD Assistant Chiefs, who report directly to MPD Chief Cathy Lanier. From 2007-2011, Burke was the first-ever Assistant Chief for the Homeland Security Bureau, where he oversaw the special operations and intelligence divisions and coordinated with federal and regional security and police forces. Since 2011, Burke has served as Assistant Chief for the Strategic Services Bureau, where he oversees agency policy, training, testing and recruiting. Burke and the other candidates who applied were interviewed and vetted by Nortons Federal Law Enforcement Nominating Commission, which is chaired by Pauline Schneider and is comprised of D.C. residents from all eight wards. The commission vets candidates and makes recommendations from which the Congresswoman selects her final choices to submit to the President. Burkes nomination will now go to the Senate. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
